5 Healthy Tips to Navigate the Holiday Parties

Tis the season for family affairs and holiday festivities! And while we want you to enjoy your time with family and friends, you don’t have to complete throw the healthy habits you’ve worked on all year by the wayside.

Here are 5 quick tips on how to better navigate your holiday parties over the next month if you’re still wanting to focus on your fitness goals too!

Balance Your Blood Sugar

When we eat an excess of sugar and limited protein and vegetables, our blood sugar spikes, and then crashes drastically. It’s this biological response that creates that holiday lull that happens after a big meal or too many trips to the dessert table. But when we focus on balancing out our plate a bit, it can decrease these massive swings in our blood sugar. So, eat the mashed potatoes, just eat some meat and veggies with it!

Move!

We said it in our last article about How to Lose 5 Pounds by Christmas, movement is key when it comes to staying healthy. Keep a schedule of getting at least 30 minutes of daily movement in amongst all the holiday festivities.

Prioritize Sleep

It’s okay that you’re going to be out a little later on occasion, but don’t forget that sleep is extremely important to your health. Adjust your wake times, avoid alcohol and caffeine too close to bedtime, and don’t hesitate to grab a nap if you’re going to be out a little later!

Hydrate!

Just because you have a holiday event doesn’t mean you shouldn’t focus on drinking plenty of water. Start hydrating as soon as you get up in the morning and continue it throughout the day. If you’re going to have a few adult beverages, alternate with water in between, and maybe during your meal.

Eat Your Fruits and Veggies!

Just like we talked about above, a balanced plate is a healthy plate. But if you’re going to a party or dinner where your veggies and fruit might be in the form of candied yams and cherry cheese cake, front load the healthier options at breakfast and lunch so you still get plenty of fiber and nutrients!

Don’t forget though…this time of year is a very small piece of a much larger timeline. Enjoy it and don’t be so hard on yourself if you indulge in a few goodies along the way.

And if you get a little out of hand this holiday season, we’re here to help 🙂
