As the temps rise in the Metro-East and we head into the warmer months, it’s time for a quick reminder about one of the easiest ways to improve your health, performance, and recovery: hydration.
You’ve heard it before: “Drink more water.” But as your workouts get sweatier and the sun gets hotter, this advice becomes even more important.
Here’s what you need to know:
Why Hydration Matters (Especially in the Heat)
When it’s hot, your body sweats more to cool itself down. That means you’re losing more water and electrolytes, even outside of your workouts. If you don’t replenish what you lose, dehydration can creep in — leading to:
- Fatigue and brain fog
- Muscle cramps
- Slower recovery
- Headaches
- Increased heart rate and perceived effort during workouts
At our gym, we often see members feel “off” during workouts, not realizing they’re just underhydrated.
How Much Water Do You Need?
Here’s a simple rule of thumb:
- Drink half your bodyweight in ounces per day.
(Ex: 180 lb = 90 oz/day)
Then, add 12–16 oz for every 30 minutes of exercise, and even more if you’re training outside or sweating heavily.
Pro Tips to Stay Hydrated
- Start your morning with 16–20 oz of water (before coffee!)
- Sip throughout the day — don’t wait until you’re thirsty
- Add electrolytes if you’re sweating a lot (especially during long workouts or outdoor training)
- Bring your water bottle to class — and drink during warm-ups, not just after
- Check your urine — clear or light yellow = hydrated
Not Just About Water
Hydration also includes electrolyte balance — especially sodium, potassium, and magnesium. These help regulate muscle contractions and nerve function.
Consider supplementing with a low-sugar electrolyte mix or adding a pinch of salt to your water if you’re doing long workouts in the heat.
Final Thoughts
Proper hydration is one of the most overlooked performance enhancers. It can impact everything from your mood to your lifts — and it’s completely within your control.
Let’s make this summer your strongest yet — one sip at a time.
